Zain Amri

About

BACKGROUND

Identified simply as Zain, he was formerly a member of the Malaysian R&B group called Soulstreet back in 1996. Still a college student at the time, Soulstreet opened a lot of doors for Zain and he quickly established himself not just as a singer, but as host of several TV shows like Zoom on Astro Ria, Rice Mice on TV2 and Take A Break on TV3. His passion for music also landed him the gig as a DJ on the now-defunct WOW FM for a show called “TONE on WOW”. He dropped out of the industry as soon as he graduated to pursue a full-time corporate profession.

Zain’s communication skills took him everywhere from stringing for NST’s Features and Entertainment Desk to the Planning Strategist at Grey Group Malaysia. His last position was at Iclif Leadership and Governance Centre as their Deputy Director of Corporate Communications.

PASSION FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

“I’ve never stopped loving singing and performing. It’s something that I continued doing no matter what I was doing at the time. I could never avoid but to end up singing on stage every few months, whether at a company function, a family wedding reception or even at kids birthday parties!”

For someone with such considerable success in the corporate world, Zain’s decision to return to the world of performing arts could be seen as foolish by many. But to him, it is a passion that burns a fire in his heart which is fueled and influenced by several life-changing events. It is also with the blessings of his wife and supportive family that Zain decided to brave his way back into the industry and create music. In short, to do things that makes him happy.

Since his return to his original passion, Zain has been working hard to not just produce his first solo album, but also taking dance lessons to complement the choreography of his first single, an English Pop R&B dance track entitled “Arms Around Me”. Planned to be launched in mid-March 2012, the single has already been launched online and is currently available via iTunes and Amazon Music. It features our very own rap freestyle champion, Kraft, who is also one of the hottest names in the current Malaysian hip hop scene.

Describing his music as “urban R&B with a K-pop twist”, Zain named Michael Jackson, Sudirman Haji Arshad, Babyface, Rain and Robbie Williams as his influences mainly because more than just singers, these artists are also charismatic performers – something which Zain would like to emulate in his career. “It’s not enough for me to just be a singer. I aspire to also be an entertainer and these heroes of mine are just some of the best in the business”.

His album, produced by Numoment Entertainment, a company/label that Zain started to re-launch his singing career, also contains a song entitled “Semoga Bahagia (Never Had a Chance to Say)” a mixed Malay/English track that features Caprice, another talented home grown rapper. Tapping into the K-pop craze, Zain has recorded a Malay song called “Lagu Ini”, which is a cover of a K-pop ballad entitled “This Song”, made popular by the group 2AM.

“I just would like to share my music to the world and what I perceive as great entertainment. This is the biggest leap of faith I have ever made. My passion has always been music and I want to live a life doing something that is not merely transactional. I want to paint it with my own colours and only stop at a stage when my mind or body gives up on me”.

Zain is certainly an artist to watch. With his passion for music, Zain shows maturity in his musical styling and is very clear of his direction. He is talking the talk, and walking the walk. Let us all join him in his journey and motivate his enthusiasm to go further in the industry.
